Decades ago, the Gold City Coliseum in Cagayan de Oro City had its glory days hosting several professional boxing bouts. It was also a home to cockfighting enthusiasts.

But today, it is now closed and dilapidated, unfit for occupancy and could topple down anytime… Kagayanons often wonder…when will it be demolished?

IMG_1789 IMG_1789a

As you can see, the facility is right at the center of the city’s booming commercial district of Limketkai Center.

It is also just a stone’s throw away from the under construction SM CDO2 Premier….

It sits on a prime lot…but still no takers…

New escalator installed at Cogon Market

Several years ago when the new Cogon Public Market in Cagayan de Oro City was opened, it hosted a rare sight in Philippine public markets – an escalator.

But then, the escalators located near the market’s atrium stopped functioning as kids in the market continue to toss in objects in the open slots of the escalator. After a thorough renovation, UNITOP, a general merchandise store occupied much of the market’s second floor and the market’s atrium have been sealed off with air-conditioned hallways with commercial stalls. And just lately, a new escalator was installed right at the northwest corner with entrance along the sidewalk.

The Mambayaan Bridge in Balingasag town in Misamis Oriental is now undergoing major repairs.

The said bridge was temporarily closed to traffic at the height of Tropical Storm Seniang after rampaging waters of Balatukan River scoured the foundations of the bridge’s piers. Motorists traveling between Cagayan de Oro and Butuan City have to be re-routed. Accordingly, the bridge repair work is estimated to be completed by end of the month.

An infrared photo of Cagayan de Oro Convention Center taken by Matoy Elipe shows the promise of this facility….but for how long?

Construction (or stoppage) of the said facility located in Taguanao is now on its …perhaps….nth year already. Our previous post was in March last year (LINK). No workers onsite…no construction equipment.

“Boasting of a 7,700 seating capacity, the Convention Center has several amenities like a multi-purpose hall that could accommodate 1,000 guests, a convertible indoor playing court, an exhibit area for 1,500 viewing guests with demountable partition for flexibility of expansion, 12 function rooms for 1,000 guests, 4 clubrooms with lockers and showers, cafeteria with approximately 100 seating capacity, and an administrative office, storage room and other support facilities.”

It remains a promise at all….except for photography enthusiasts who regard the idle facility as a major subject to learn and enhance your photography skills.

Construction of the project started on June 30, 2001 with the original target date of completion on August 18, 2003 and with a contract price of P349.9 million….in June this year, it will be the 14th year already. The controversial Iloilo Convention Center which began construction in 2013 is even set to be finished ahead of this one….
