If you have travel plans to and from Cagayan de Oro towards the western area including Laguindingan Airport, you might want to add more time in your travel as daily traffic has started to build up particularly during rush hours along Route 9 (Butuan City-Cagayan de Oro City-Iligan City Road) or the National Highway specifically in Opol town where the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is constructing two major bridge projects.

The two major links now under construction are the new Opol Bridge (near the Opol Market) and the Buncalalan Bridge (near junction of National Highway and Opol-Bulua By-pass Road). Only one lane on each side is passable as the old 2-lane concrete bridges were closed for demolition. The new bridges had been elevated and expanded into 6 lanes of traffic on a 60-meter road-right-of way.

Motorists are advised to be extra patient and careful in negotiating the de-tour.

Motorists can now pass thru the old Opol Bridge near Opol Public Market after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) temporarily stopped one of two bridge projects in Opol town due to numerous complaints about the heavy traffic in the area in the past few days.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Northern Mindanao has considered plans to widen major waterways in Cagayan de Oro City including Bitan-ag Creek as among its long-term solutions to address urban flooding in the city but road right-of-way problems (RROW) including presence of informal settlers are hindering the said plans.

In a report from SunStar CDO, a DPWH official was quoted as saying that Bitan-ag Creel for example will be widened by at least 12 meters. Accordingly, the plan is feasible but still needs intervention from the city government to clear the area of people living beside the canal or creek.

DPWH is currently working on two major drainage projects in the city near Agora and in Carmen.
