Aside from the Bitan-ag to Kolambog Creek Diversion Project (LINK), three more creek-diversion projects are already in progress aimed at lessening the overflowing of water along Sapang Creek in Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City. The Sapang Bridge project was just the initial phase. This was disclosed by DPWH spokesperson Vinah Mahinay as quoted in SunStar CDO.

These projects include the 1.5-kilometer diversion of Sapang Creek to Macalajar Bay using the road to the west-bound terminal, the 500-meter diversion of Sapang Creek at NHA in Kauswagan, and the 500-meter diversion of Sapang Creek at Apovel Subdivision in Bulua. (LINK)

You can see from the map below the circuitous route of Sapang Creek which starts near Camp Evangelista in Patag then flows northeast and exits to the National Highway beside Toyota Showroom. It then flows beside the highway and flows northwest beside Vjandep Commissary. From there, it flows further northwest through the fish ponds and drains into the bay to the east.

Based on the plan by the DPWH, it intends to divert a significant volume of the creek towards Westbound Terminal straight to the bay and another creek diversion at NHA Kauswagan perhaps to connect to the existing drainage outlet north of NHA. We still don’t know the exact route of the diversion at Apovel Subdivision. Accordingly, these are included in the proposed additional P300 million which would complete the drainage projects.

Flooding at Apovel and along the National Highway near Toyota have recurred despite the completion of the Sapang Bridge project last year.

Keep posted.
